Nescafe Beetle

Remembering an advert from the 1980s. In Sky magazine. A white Volkswagen Beetle. A heating coil device that plugged into the car's cigarette lighter, heating a cup of instant coffee. There must have been a TV ad. A women, dark curly hair. A windswept view of the the ocean. She may have been crying and emowept view of the the ocean. She may have been crying and emotional at the beginning of the ad. And of course, with her hot cup of coffee in hand, wrapped up warm in her jumper and scarf, taking in the view, by the end of the ad her world was alright again. Compressed story telling.

In the magazine was a competition to win the car. It was a cool car. I didnt win. Looking back I can see the ad was leveraging themes of independance, of freedom (wild weathger, the outdoors, a car, a cup of coffee), of tranformation (sad to happy, a break-up), overcoming life's difficulties and everything being ok.
